Recent speculation about wide receiver Tyreek Hill's potential return to the National Football League, including statements from his agent anticipating a signing in the coming days, has taken a dramatic turn. These developments occurred just before the commencement of Hill's divorce trial on Tuesday.
During the court proceedings, Lakeeta Vaccaro, Hill's estranged wife, delivered testimony outlining various incidents of alleged domestic abuse. Her lawsuit complaint details eight distinct instances of such abuse.
NFL Review Underway Following Allegations
While the specifics of the divorce itself typically fall outside the NFL's purview, the serious allegations of abuse are of significant concern to the league. These claims could potentially derail or at least substantially delay Hill's return to the field, as they fall under the league's Personal Conduct Policy.
Despite Hill currently being a free agent, the NFL's review into the domestic violence allegations made by Vaccaro is ongoing, with no set timeline for its conclusion, according to a league source. The detailed account of these allegations presented in open court on Tuesday is almost certain to be considered a critical component of this review, which will ultimately determine Hill's eligibility to play once he is healthy.
Vaccaro, who is seeking both punitive and compensatory damages from Hill, testified during her direct examination about a specific incident in July 2024. She recounted a visit with Hill to the ESPN campus in Orlando.
According to Vaccaro, Hill became visibly upset because she had not arranged for professional hair and makeup services for potential interviews during their visit. Later, at their hotel, Hill's anger persisted and escalated, leading him to attempt to punch her stomach. Vaccaro testified that she managed to block the blow by placing her hands over her stomach, though the strike still made contact with her hands.
At the time of this alleged incident, Vaccaro was pregnant. She further testified that Hill expressed he did not want the baby.
A History of Alleged Abuse
Vaccaro, who is the sister of former NFL safety Kenny Vaccaro, described a pattern of abuse throughout her relationship with Hill. She testified that their 18-month marriage was characterized by alternating periods of calm and conflict.
"During this whole period, 18-month marriage, it was a consistent two-week on, two-week off situation," Vaccaro testified. "Of course we had our moments when it was, you know, beautiful. But then the two weeks of, when it went back to this angry man, it was bad."
Among other accusations, Vaccaro stated that Hill once physically lifted her to remove her from their residence. She also alleged an instance where he pushed her against a car door during an argument. Additionally, Vaccaro accused Hill of grabbing and injuring her breasts on multiple occasions during disputes. She further claimed that after an argument in their car, Hill once left her stranded on the side of a road.
Defense Questions Consistency
Hill’s legal counsel sought to highlight inconsistencies between Vaccaro's prior deposition and her testimony given on Tuesday. The defense also emphasized the absence of physical evidence supporting the abuse claims. Hill's lawyer asserted that while the allegations are serious and should be treated as such, this does not automatically mean they should be accepted as fact merely because they were made.
It is relevant to note that Hill has a documented history of alleged or proven incidents of abuse against women.
Tuesday’s court proceedings concluded shortly after 5 p.m., with neither Hill nor Vaccaro making statements to reporters present. The trial is scheduled to resume on Wednesday.
