Passenger Jumps Overboard From Carnival Panorama Cruise Ship Off Mexican Coast

A passenger on the Carnival Panorama cruise ship reportedly went overboard during the vessel's final full day of a week-long sailing.

The cruise, which had departed from Long Beach, California, on September 13, was en route back to its homeport from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, when the male passenger is said to have jumped from the ship, according to information provided by the cruise operator.

Cruise Line Initiates Search and Support

A spokesperson for the cruise line stated that upon being alerted to a missing individual, the ship's crew immediately began search and investigation protocols. These procedures included examining closed-circuit television footage and contacting both U.S. and Mexican Coast Guard authorities.

The company also confirmed it is offering support to the family members who were traveling with the guest. The cruise line expressed its condolences, stating, "Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones."

Onboard Account of Events

According to an account shared by a user on Reddit who claimed to be on board the same voyage, announcements regarding a missing guest began around 11 a.m. on a Saturday. The Carnival Panorama had departed its last port of call, Puerto Vallarta, on Thursday at 8 p.m.

The announcements for the missing guest were reportedly repeated numerous times over several hours. At approximately 3 p.m., the ship was observed changing course and turning around.

Around 3:30 p.m., another announcement was made, informing passengers of a shipwide search and instructing all guests to return to their staterooms. Security personnel subsequently visited each stateroom to scan guests' ship identification cards, a standard procedure implemented during such search operations.

Approximately an hour later, a subsequent announcement indicated that the search was ongoing, and passengers were again advised to remain in their staterooms.

By approximately 5 p.m., the captain and cruise director informed passengers that onboard camera footage had confirmed the guest had gone overboard. They stated that local authorities would continue the search and rescue efforts, and passengers were no longer required to stay in their staterooms.

The family and traveling companions of the missing passenger were officially informed of his disappearance and received support from the ship's care team.

Shortly after 7 p.m., guests were notified that the ship was expected to arrive back in Long Beach by 9 a.m. the following morning.
