Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman departed Sunday's 9-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds after being struck in the face by a foul ball while positioned in the on-deck circle.
The incident occurred during the top of the fourth inning at Great American Ball Park. Teammate Michael Busch hit a foul ball that chopped into the dirt near home plate, subsequently ricocheting upward and hitting Bregman directly on the left side of his face.
Bregman was seen heading towards the visitors' dugout, visibly in pain and holding his face immediately after the impact.
Medical personnel promptly escorted him to the clubhouse, and Matt Shaw entered the game to assume duties at third base.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell confirmed that the ball directly hit Bregman's left cheekbone, resulting in a laceration beneath his eye, a nosebleed, and noticeable swelling.
Following the incident, Bregman was transported to a Cincinnati hospital. There, he underwent CT scans and X-rays to assess for potential orbital and cheek fractures.
Later on Sunday, Bregman provided an update via his Instagram account, sharing an image that showed his left eye swollen shut and his nose plugged. His message read, "Thanks for the messages y'all. I'll be back."
Reports indicated that medical staff cleared him to travel back to Chicago with the team that same Sunday night.

Any extended absence for Bregman could significantly affect the Cubs, especially as they navigate a tight National League Wild Card race with only one week remaining in the regular season.
Should Bregman be placed on the injured list, the Cubs would likely rely on Matt Shaw and Pedro Ramirez to cover third base.
