A Texas resident has been apprehended and now faces a capital murder charge in connection with a recent roadway shooting that resulted in the death of a 5-year-old girl, law enforcement officials confirmed. Jeremy Porter, 47, was taken into custody and subsequently booked into the Harris County Jail in Houston. Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez identified Porter as the suspect in the fatal shooting of Zah'Layah Walter.
Detectives utilized various pieces of evidence, including data gathered from automated license plate readers, to pinpoint Porter as the alleged perpetrator. His arrest occurred within 24 hours of the incident, according to authorities.
Fatal Roadway Incident
The shooting transpired on Saturday night in the northwest area of Harris County. Zah'Layah was traveling in a vehicle with her mother, Monica Hicks, and her four siblings when their car came under fire, the sheriff's office reported. Officials stated that bullets struck the vehicle, leading to the immediate death of the 5-year-old child.
Monica Hicks recounted to local media that she was driving her five children home from her mother's residence when shots were fired at their vehicle on Grant Road, near Jones Road. She described the terrifying moments, stating,
All my kids in the back seat were screaming, and they continued to shoot in my car. And I did not know my daughter was hit until I pulled into my apartment.
