Jury Deadlocks in Federal Trial for Man Accused of Starting Deadly Palisades Fire
Jurors informed a federal judge they could not reach a unanimous decision in the case against Jonathan Rinderknecht, who faces charges related to the devastating 2025 California wildfire.

Jurors in the federal trial of a man charged with igniting the catastrophic 2025 Palisades Fire in California informed a judge on Thursday that they were unable to reach a unanimous verdict, moments after initially indicating they had come to a decision.
This declaration came during the second day of deliberations in the trial of Jonathan Rinderknecht, 30, following a ten-day federal court proceeding. The blaze is recognized as the most destructive in Los Angeles County's history, resulting in at least twelve fatalities.
Initially, a note from the jury foreman conveyed to the judge that a verdict had been reached. However, a subsequent note, delivered mere minutes later, stated the opposite, indicating an impasse.
We have people on both sides that are dead-set. Unwavering. We are at a standstill. We are unsure how to proceed.
In response to the jury's message, the judge inquired about potential assistance the court could offer.
For example, would an additional instruction or the re-reading of any testimony help the jury in their deliberations?
The jury's reply indicated no further help would be productive:
There is nothing the court can do to assist the jury in their deliberations. Additional instructions or rereading the testimony would not help in deliberations. Unfortunately, we cannot reach a unanimous verdict.
Both prosecuting and defense attorneys agreed they required additional time to review their legal options following this development. The judge ultimately instructed the jurors to reconvene for further deliberations on Friday morning.
Potential Outcomes After Jury Impasse
A deadlocked jury could ultimately lead to the judge declaring a mistrial. Should this occur, federal prosecutors would then need to determine whether to pursue a new trial for Rinderknecht. He currently faces charges of destruction of property by means of fire, arson affecting property used in interstate commerce, and timber set afire. Rinderknecht has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges.
Federal prosecutors have asserted that Rinderknecht's alleged actions in starting what became the Palisades Fire were fueled by a combination of anger, feelings of loneliness, and a desire for retribution against the wealthy.
The Devastating Path of the Palisades Fire
The fire originated shortly after midnight on January 1, 2025, in a secluded, brush-covered area within the Pacific Palisades community. This initial ignition was designated the Lachman Fire.
Firefighters responded on New Year's Day and believed they had successfully extinguished the blaze. However, subsequent investigations revealed that the fire had not been fully put out, instead continuing to smolder beneath the ground.
On January 7, 2025, powerful Santa Ana winds reignited the subterranean embers, causing the fire to erupt above ground once more. Propelled by the intense winds and exacerbated by severe drought conditions, the fire rapidly escalated into the full-blown Palisades Fire. It ultimately consumed over 23,000 acres and destroyed approximately 6,800 structures, a significant number of which were residential homes.
Arguments Presented in Court
During closing arguments on Tuesday, Assistant U.S. Attorney Danbee Kim told jurors that Rinderknecht viewed the affluent Palisades area as a symbol of nationwide wealth disparity, noting that the defendant harbored
