While initial X-rays revealed no fracture, an MRI scheduled for Monday is expected to confirm that Daniels will be sidelined for an unspecified period. Marcus Mariota is set to assume the starting quarterback role in Daniels' absence.
"We will rally so hard around Marcus until, you know, Jayden's back," Quinn stated, emphasizing the team's commitment to supporting their backup.
This injury marks a troubling recurrence for Daniels, who experienced a similar elbow issue in 2025 during a game against the Seattle Seahawks. This history raises concerns that the current setback could once again prove to be a season-altering event for both Daniels and the Commanders organization.
A medical expert, who previously served as the head physician for an NFL team for 17 seasons, reviewed video of the incident and offered insights. The expert noted that the video clearly showed a left elbow dislocation, similar to his previous injury. It was explained that a joint can become more susceptible to dislocation a second time because the original ligament tear often heals in a "looser" state.
Daniels was observed covering his face with a towel as he was transported to the locker room, seemingly to conceal his reaction from the stadium crowd. The severity of the situation suggests that if the MRI results align with initial observations, the Commanders' season, only in its second week, could be in jeopardy.
A History of Elbow Issues
Daniels' prior left elbow dislocation occurred on November 2, 2025, during Washington’s Week 9 loss to Seattle. At that time, an MRI showed no fracture or ligament damage, allowing him to avoid surgery and bypass placement on injured reserve.
The Commanders, with Mariota as the starter during Daniels' recovery last season, posted a 2-6 record. The team did not manage a victory in the immediate aftermath of Sunday's new injury against Dallas.
Daniels returned to play in Week 14 against Minnesota but subsequently aggravated the elbow. He was not cleared to play the following game and was ultimately sidelined for the final three weeks of the 2025 season, as the team prioritized his full recovery for the upcoming 2026 season. This latest incident, however, appears to have derailed that recovery, at least in the near term.

When asked about Daniels' reaction to his misfortune, Coach Quinn shared:
"I didn't see him until postgame. But it was hard. It was quiet and you know, emotional in that space, knowing how much he's put into his return."
