A heated altercation over beach lounge chairs in Vouliagmeni, Greece, a popular coastal area south of Athens, tragically resulted in the death of an 82-year-old man last week. The incident, which unfolded on the morning of September 20, involved a dispute between the deceased and two other individuals concerning sunbed reservations.
The Dispute Escalates
According to reports from local media, the confrontation began when the 82-year-old man attempted to secure a cluster of six sunbeds for his arriving companions. This action reportedly conflicted with a 76-year-old man and his 21-year-old female companion, who had already purchased tickets for and occupied two of the loungers within that same area.
Witnesses described how the verbal exchange quickly intensified, with shouts audible across the beach. The situation turned physical when the 82-year-old reportedly struck the young woman in the face. This alleged assault prompted retaliation from the 76-year-old man and other bystanders who intervened.
Tragic Outcome and Aftermath
During the violent struggle, the 82-year-old man experienced cardiac arrest and collapsed on the sand. Onlookers, including a nurse present at the beach, immediately rushed to provide assistance, administering CPR and utilizing a defibrillator.
Despite these urgent life-saving efforts, the man was transported to Asklepieion Hospital in the nearby town of Voula, where he was pronounced dead shortly after 11 a.m. Authorities have since ordered a postmortem examination to ascertain the precise cause of death.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
Following the incident, the 76-year-old man was taken into custody and has been charged with causing fatal bodily harm. The 21-year-old woman accompanying him was also arrested on charges of verbal abuse and aiding and abetting fatal bodily harm. She was later released, having sustained a swollen and bloody face during the altercation.
The manager of the beach resort was also detained for questioning by police regarding the events. Both the 76-year-old suspect and the 21-year-old woman are expected to appear before a judge for testimony on Wednesday, September 23.
