A routine traffic stop in Alhambra, California, escalated into a major drug bust after a police K-9 indicated the presence of narcotics within an SUV packed with cardboard boxes.

A traffic stop conducted by California law enforcement officers led to the confiscation of approximately 200 kilograms, or about 440 pounds, of cocaine. The significant seizure occurred after a police K-9 unit detected the illicit substance allegedly concealed within an SUV filled with cardboard boxes, according to authorities.
Major Drug Seizure Initiated by Traffic Stop
The incident unfolded after officers with the Alhambra Police Department initiated a traffic stop along Valley Boulevard, near the 710 Freeway. While officials did not disclose the specific reason for the initial stop, they observed that the driver's vehicle contained an unusually large quantity of cargo.
“The driver was transporting more cardboard boxes than Amazon on Prime Day,” the police department shared in a social media post, highlighting the sheer volume of packages.
As officers questioned the driver regarding the extensive cargo, he provided a series of explanations.
Conflicting Narratives and Canine Intervention
Initially, the driver claimed he was traveling home to Huntington Park from his cousin’s residence and asserted that the boxes did not belong to him. However, his account soon changed.
“Later came version 2.0 of his lore,” police stated, indicating that the driver then claimed he was transporting diesel parts to a repair shop owned by a friend.
At this point, K-9 Otis and his handler were brought to the scene to assist in the investigation. Otis, a police service dog, conducted a sniff search of the vehicle and subsequently alerted officers to the presence of contraband.
Arrest and Acclaim for K-9 Otis
Following Otis's alert, officers proceeded to search the SUV. Their inspection uncovered approximately 200 kilos of cocaine meticulously packed inside the vehicle. “Thanks to Otis’ top-tier nose, he alerted to the vehicle, and officers discovered the SUV was packed with approximately 200 kilos of cocaine,” police confirmed.
The driver, identified as Julio Rangel from Huntington Park, was taken into custody and booked into the Alhambra Police Department jail.
In the aftermath of the substantial drug bust, K-9 Otis was widely celebrated as the operation's unsung hero. Police expressed their gratitude for his efforts, stating, “A round of a-paws for our good boy, K9 Otis.”
The canine's exceptional work also garnered significant praise from social media users. Many commenters suggested that Otis deserved a promotion, with some even playfully proposing he was on track to become police chief. Another user exclaimed, “Give that dog a bone!” while one humorously remarked, “No One escapes from the Long Paw of …. The DOG.” Others suggested that, at the very least, Otis had earned a well-deserved steak dinner for his successful detection.
