Penguins Forward Andrei Kuzmenko Honors Late Father with New Jersey Number

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Andrei Kuzmenko rejoined his team on Friday after a period of absence following the tragic death of his father, Alexander, in a bear attack last month in Siberia. In a poignant gesture, the 30-year-old, who is in his inaugural season with the Penguins, has decided to change his jersey number to honor his late father.

Kuzmenko spoke to the media at the team's practice facility in advance of Saturday's game against the Montreal Canadiens. Displaying remarkable composure given the circumstances, he conveyed that he wanted to address reporters out of respect for their professional duties.

Details of the Tragic Incident

During the press conference, Kuzmenko shared the harrowing details surrounding his father's passing, which occurred while he was on a fishing excursion.

"My father was on a permitted fishing trip with friends. He was in the water when a bear approached him from behind and attacked," Kuzmenko recounted. "My father fought the bear for an hour and ten minutes, and he remarkably lived for two days afterward."

He also took the opportunity to express profound gratitude for the outpouring of support he has received in the wake of the devastating event.

A New Number, A Profound Tribute

Prior to this decision, Kuzmenko had worn No. 96 during his previous NHL tenure with the Vancouver Canucks. Upon joining the Penguins, he had initially prepared to use No. 10. However, he will now proudly wear No. 62, a number laden with significant personal meaning.

His father, Alexander, was 62 years old at the time of his death. Additionally, his mother was born in 1962, adding another layer of personal connection to the chosen number.

Kuzmenko's NHL Journey

Before his arrival in the NHL for the 2022-23 season, Kuzmenko honed his skills in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). Since transitioning to North America, he has participated in 271 NHL games, accumulating a total of 182 points, consisting of 85 goals and 97 assists.
