City Council Member Zohran Mamdani Dodges Questions on Reported Plan for Wealthy Tax Increases
New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani repeatedly avoided inquiries regarding a rumored campaign to advocate for higher taxes on affluent residents and corporations.

New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani, a prominent democratic socialist, faced persistent questioning Thursday regarding reports of an impending public campaign aimed at increasing taxes for the city's wealthiest residents and large corporations. Mamdani consistently refrained from directly addressing the details of the alleged initiative.
Details of the Reported Initiative
According to recent reports, Mamdani is expected to begin building public support for these tax proposals following Labor Day. These efforts would reportedly mirror similar measures that Governor Kathy Hochul previously declined to support in early 2026. The anticipated campaign is scheduled to precede the New York Legislature's reconvening in Albany in January 2027 and Governor Hochul's re-election campaign later this fall.
Mamdani's Evasive Responses
During a televised interview, Mamdani repeatedly sidestepped direct questions about the potential campaign, eventually stating that such discussions would only occur after the November election.
When asked if he had communicated with Governor Hochul about the reported campaign, Mamdani did not provide a direct answer. Instead, he highlighted recent policy successes, specifically the opening of 2,000 free child care slots for New Yorkers.
"The governor and I are in constant communication and, frankly, I appreciate her partnership because if it wasn't for the governor, then we wouldn't have been able to stand together to announce that we had more than 5,000 New Yorkers come forward to apply for these 2,000 free child care seats," Mamdani stated. "And I'm so excited about that, and the fact that we're going to expand to 12,000, and the work that's still to come."
The interviewer then pressed Mamdani on whether the Democratic Socialists of America would participate in the potential fall campaign. Again, Mamdani declined to answer directly, emphasizing his current focus.
"My focus right now is where we are, which is August, and ensuring that everything that we're doing is keeping New Yorkers safe amidst a heat wave and preparing for the school year," Mamdani explained. "A lot of the conversation about what comes after November, I think, is a conversation for what comes after November."
The reporter followed up, asking directly, "So you don't plan to launch a campaign to tax the rich before the November election?"
Mamdani responded, "The conversations I've been having with the governor and with my team are about the here and now and there will always be time for the conversations that come after that."
Previous Tax Initiatives and Alternatives
The rumored campaign would represent a renewed effort by Mamdani to address the city's multi-billion-dollar budget deficit through increased taxation, a strategy Governor Hochul had previously opposed. Mamdani's earlier proposal sought to raise the city's personal income tax rate for individuals earning $1 million or more annually, a measure he estimated could generate approximately $3 billion each year. His plan also included increasing corporate tax rates.
As an alternative, Governor Hochul and Mamdani jointly supported and advanced the state's inaugural pied-à-terre tax, which is an annual surcharge on specific high-value secondary residences. This measure was approved in May 2026, and state and city officials anticipate it could generate around $500 million annually.
