A recent decision to extend an invitation to New York City Council Member Zohran Mamdani for Manhattan's yearly Columbus Day Parade has drawn considerable criticism from several Italian-American community figures.
The Columbus Citizens Foundation, the organization responsible for orchestrating the parade, reportedly invited Mamdani with the aim of fostering a more positive relationship between City Hall and the Italian-American community. However, Mamdani's previous public statements and actions regarding the 15th-century Italian explorer Christopher Columbus have prompted a strong negative reaction from those who view the invitation as inappropriate.
Community Leaders Express Displeasure
Mike Crispi, president of the Italian American Civil Rights League, voiced his strong disapproval on social media. "Are you kidding me? This is a WEAK and FECKLESS move by the organizers," Crispi wrote, adding that Mamdani had "showed contempt for our people." He urged Italian Americans to "wake up and get tough" to preserve their culture.
Crispi's remarks referenced a 2020 social media post by Mamdani, which featured a photograph of him gesturing with his middle finger at a Columbus statue, accompanied by the caption "take it down." For many Italian Americans, Columbus holds a nearly legendary status, seen as a historical figure embodying a crucial link between their heritage and the United States.
Christopher Loiacono, president of the Columbus Citizens Foundation, addressed the decision to invite Mamdani, stating, "We feel cooperating is always the better path . . . and we hope to create a good relationship with his office." He also expressed hope that Mamdani would be "more open to [working] with the Italian community."
As of now, it remains uncertain whether Council Member Mamdani has accepted the invitation. The Columbus Day Parade is scheduled to take place on Monday, October 12, in Manhattan.
Past Controversies Resurface
New York City Councilwoman Joann Ariola, a Republican representing Queens, also criticized the invitation. "This is a man who has made it clear that he doesn’t respect Christopher Columbus, and he doesn’t even think us enough of a group to put on his immigrant enclave map," Ariola commented. She questioned his motives for attending, suggesting he should "sit this one out."
Ariola's statement alluded to an earlier controversy this year involving a city-published map of ethnic enclaves that notably excluded Little Italy. The map, initially developed by a previous administration in 2023, was updated by Mamdani's office with additional neighborhoods for its 2026 version. Mamdani's administration has since taken steps to revise the map to include Little Italy.
This is not the first instance this year where Mamdani's presence at a public event has faced organized opposition. His attendance at the annual memorial service at Ground Zero on September 11 led some victim family members to circulate a petition calling for him to abstain from the event.
"Just as Mamdani's presence at the 9/11 Ceremony was inappropriate, we Italian/Americans don't want him on Columbus Day either," commented right-wing political operative Roger Stone on social media.
The controversy has also drawn reactions from individuals outside the Italian-American community. Jewish radio host Sid Rosenberg, who has been an honorary dignitary at the parade for several years, expressed his dismay. "The organizers of the parade invited [Mamdani] to attend? What? This Radical Islam mother f*cker gave the finger to a Columbus statue and left Little Italy/Arthur Avenue OFF his bullsh*t immigrant map … When did my Italian brothers and sisters become so soft! … I will NOT attend this year if he is there," Rosenberg stated, adding, "The Italians need to step up and stop this!"
Potential for Competing Events
In response to the ongoing dispute, Mike Crispi has issued a threat to organize a separate, competing Columbus Day parade next year if the Columbus Citizens Foundation does not retract its invitation to Council Member Mamdani.
