A stunning upset unfolded on Monday night as Morocco eliminated the Netherlands from the World Cup in a dramatic penalty shootout, delivering one of the tournament’s most memorable moments.
Dramatic Late Goals Force Penalties
The match saw the Netherlands, widely considered a strong contender for the title after consistently deep runs in previous tournaments, take a crucial lead late in regulation. Forward Cody Gakpo capitalized on a loose ball inside the penalty area, expertly finding the back of the net. However, the Dutch advantage proved short-lived. In a dramatic turn during stoppage time, Morocco's Issa Diop rose to meet a cross, heading the ball past the Dutch goalkeeper to level the score and send the contest into a penalty shootout.
The tension culminated in the penalty phase, where Morocco ultimately secured a 3-2 victory. Ismael Saibari converted the decisive penalty kick, sealing Morocco's progression to the Round of 16.
"We know when we do everything on the pitch, it’s God that gives something back to us as well," said Morocco head coach Mohamed Ouahbi following the match. "We give all the energy that we have on the field. Rahimi’s goal could have not been a goal, but it went in thankfully."
Historical Context and Next Challenge
The Netherlands' exit marks a significant departure from their recent World Cup history, having reached at least the Round of 16 in their last 11 appearances, including a quarterfinal finish in the 2022 tournament held in Qatar. Morocco, by contrast, made history in 2022 by becoming the first African nation to advance to the semifinals.
Morocco is now set to face Canada in the Round of 16. The match will take place in Houston on Saturday. The Moroccan squad previously defeated Canada 2-1 during the group stage of the 2022 World Cup.
"I think Morocco has gained everybody’s respect now," Coach Ouahbi remarked. "I saw (the Netherlands’ style of play) as a form of respect."
This result adds to a series of unexpected outcomes witnessed in the current World Cup tournament. Earlier, Paraguay achieved a surprising victory over Germany following a contentious decision to overturn a German goal late in their match.
