Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) was reportedly discovered unconscious at his Washington, D.C., residence last month before being transported to a hospital. The specific nature of his condition and his anticipated return to the Senate chamber remain undisclosed.
An emergency dispatch recording from June 14, the date of Senator McConnell's hospitalization, was made public on Wednesday by reporter Desirée Townsend and subsequently detailed by PunchBowl News. The audio indicated that the long-serving Republican senator was "unconscious," prompting the dispatcher to request an Advanced Life Support (ALS) response.
The 82-year-old senator has been absent from Senate proceedings since the incident, with no clear timeline for his return. His office did not respond to inquiries regarding his current health status, the reasons for his hospitalization, or when he is expected to resume his duties in the upper chamber.
Official Statements and Leadership Updates
On the day of McConnell's admission, his office released a statement confirming he "was admitted to the hospital this morning" and was "receiving excellent care." Later, his spokesperson, David Popp, affirmed that Senator McConnell was "working closely with staff on Senate business and Kentucky matters as he continues his recovery."
Other Republican leaders in the Senate also confirmed having communicated with McConnell following the event.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.), who succeeded McConnell as the leader of the Senate GOP, commented that McConnell "is clearly dialed in to what’s going on." Thune added, "He’s following along with stuff we are doing this week up here. Very much so."
Senator McConnell's Recent Health History
Senator Mitch McConnell, who is retiring from the Senate at the end of this year, has been hospitalized twice in 2026, including an eight-day stay in February for flu-like symptoms.
Over the past few years, the veteran senator has encountered several medical incidents, both publicly and privately.
In 2023, he sustained a fall that resulted in a cracked rib and a concussion. He experienced another fall in July of that same year. Shortly thereafter, he had two distinct episodes where he appeared to freeze while in front of cameras. In 2024, he fell during a Senate Republican lunch, and last year he tripped and fell within the Senate basement.
