Juan Soto's Costly Misjudgment Contributes to Mets' Continued Slide Against Blue Jays
A seemingly routine single in Tuesday's game against Toronto escalated into an inside-the-park home run, highlighting the ongoing difficulties for the struggling New York Mets.

The 2026 New York Mets are experiencing a remarkably difficult season, a situation underscored by a peculiar play during Tuesday night's matchup against the Toronto Blue Jays. In an opening sequence that quickly went awry, a standard base hit transformed into an unconventional inside-the-park home run, with the team's high-profile player, Juan Soto, at the center of the defensive lapse.
Entering the game with a disappointing 35-49 record, the Mets' struggles have been one of the most unexpected narratives of the season's first half, especially considering their substantial payroll ranks second only to the reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in Major League Baseball.
Hoping to find some momentum as they embarked on a six-game road trip, the team was also navigating the aftermath of manager Carlos Mendoza's recent dismissal. However, the contest in Toronto began in the worst possible fashion, ultimately contributing to a narrow 2-1 defeat.
Defensive Blunder Amplifies Mets' Early Season Woes
The sequence began when George Springer stepped into the batter's box against Mets starter Sean Manaea. On a 2-2 pitch, Springer hit a ball to left field that, under normal circumstances, should have been a routine single.
However, Soto misjudged the ball's bounce off the artificial turf, opting to charge aggressively as if to field it on a short hop. Instead, the ball sailed directly under his glove, continuing its trajectory all the way to the left field fence.
Soto initially jogged toward the rolling ball, while the experienced Springer accelerated around the bases. Soto later indicated his decision not to sprint immediately was due to rookie center fielder A.J. Ewing already being in pursuit. Yet, the situation deteriorated further.
A Series of Misplays Leads to Unconventional Run
As Ewing tracked the ball and simultaneously glanced to locate Springer on the bases, he failed to field the ball cleanly. Instead of securing it, he inadvertently tossed it back towards the fence while attempting to scoop it with his glove.
This prolonged miscue allowed Springer to be waved around third base. By the time Soto finally retrieved the ball and looked back toward the infield, Springer had already rounded third and crossed home plate, completing his
