Ig Nobel Awards Honor Unconventional Research, From Cockroach Milk to Kissing's History

An eclectic group of researchers recently received accolades for their distinctive contributions to science, including investigations into cockroach milk, the evolutionary timeline of kissing, and a novel method for assessing soil health using underwear.

The satirical Ig Nobel ceremony, an annual event celebrating scientific research that is both genuinely conducted and utterly improbable, was held in Zurich this past Thursday. The digital publication, Annals of Improbable Research, presented the awards.

Established in 1991, this year marked the first time the awards were hosted outside the United States, a decision reportedly made due to concerns that some honorees might face difficulties obtaining visas to enter the country.

Exploring Peculiar Scientific Inquiries

Among the other recipients were researchers whose work delved into various peculiar subjects. One study observed a correlation between higher socioeconomic status and a greater propensity for unethical conduct, exemplified by actions like taking candy from a child. Additional honorees included those who investigated the most effective techniques for blowing one's nose, and a team that studied snake behavior by gently stepping on them to understand what triggers a defensive bite.

"The general pattern seems to be that, with wealth and rising power, you become less engaged with the needs of others and less burdened by the needs of social relationships," Dr. Paul Piff, a social psychologist at the University of California, Irvine, stated. "Taking candy from children might be the least of our worries, but it’s emblematic of the tendency to prioritize one’s own needs over those of others."

Unraveling the Mysteries of Human and Animal Behavior

Further honorees included scientists who investigated the influence of shared adversaries on group cohesion, researchers who engineered attempts to create a urinal that prevents splashing, and a project exploring the use of deceased mosquitoes in 3D printing applications. Another recognized study explored parental olfactory preferences, noting that while parents typically adore the scent of their newborn infants, this affection does not extend to their teenage children.

The team dedicated to charting the evolutionary history of kissing provided a precise definition of the act: "a non-agonistic interaction involving directed, intraspecific, oral-oral contact with some movement of the lips/mouthparts and no food transfer." This scientific framing offers a unique perspective on an intimate human behavior.

"Next time you kiss someone, you can think, 'This is a 21.5 million-year-old tradition that I'm honoring here," evolutionary biologist Matilda Brindle of the University of Oxford remarked. "It's not just a modern human behavior. It's really ancestral.' And to us, that suggests that it probably has quite a useful evolutionary function."

Brindle further suggested that her team's research indicates Neanderthals likely engaged in kissing, potentially even with early humans.

The Distinctive Ig Nobel Experience

During the ceremony, all recipients are presented with a distinctive trophy, designed to resemble a hybrid of a mushroom and a human foot. A playful tradition sees the audience engaging by tossing paper airplanes at the stage as the awards are conferred.
