Decades-Old Mystery Solved: 'Happy Face Killer's' Final Unknown Victim Identified

The final unidentified victim of the notorious serial killer Keith Hunter Jesperson, infamously known as the "Happy Face Killer," has been positively identified over three decades after her remains were discovered along a California highway. Authorities announced Thursday that the woman, previously known to investigators only as "Claudia," is Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter from Texas.

McWhorter's body was found on August 30, 1992, near Highway 95, approximately seven miles north of Blythe, California. Jesperson, a long-haul truck driver who ultimately confessed to murdering eight women across several states, later admitted to her killing. He had told investigators he knew the woman as "Claudia," but her true identity remained a mystery for years.

Breakthrough in Cold Case Identification

The breakthrough in identifying McWhorter follows a renewed public effort by Riverside County investigators in 2024. Genetic genealogy had previously linked the unidentified victim to relatives on her father's side, but a crucial maternal connection was needed to definitively confirm her identity.

An investigative lead eventually guided the cold case team to a direct maternal relative of McWhorter, according to the district attorney's office. This allowed investigators to pinpoint a possible genetic link to another member of the maternal family.

A DNA sample obtained earlier this week confirmed this connection, enabling investigators to positively identify McWhorter nearly 34 years after her discovery. McWhorter's sisters, who grew up with her, had spent decades without knowing what had happened after she vanished from Texas in the 1990s, prosecutors revealed.

"I want to thank the public for the role you play in our investigations," Billy Hester, the supervising investigator for the Cold Case Unit, said in a news release. "When people take the time to share information, submit a tip or simply pay attention to what is happening in their community, it can make a real difference. You may not know where a piece of information will lead, but our investigators will follow it. Most importantly, I hope this will finally bring closure to Lydia’s family."

The district attorney's Division of Victim Services is currently assisting McWhorter's family as they make arrangements to honor her memory and lay her to rest.

The "Happy Face Killer" and His Crimes

Keith Jesperson was apprehended in 1995. He subsequently confessed to the murders of eight women committed between 1990 and 1995 across California, Washington state, Oregon, Florida, Nebraska, and Wyoming.

He earned the moniker "Happy Face Killer" after dispatching letters to media outlets detailing his crimes, which he notably signed with a smiley face symbol.

Jesperson pleaded guilty to McWhorter's murder in Riverside County on January 8, 2010. He received a sentence of 25 years to life in prison for this crime. He is currently serving multiple life sentences in Oregon for his other convictions.

With the identification of Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter, the Riverside County cold case team has successfully resolved the final unidentified-victim case associated with the murders for which Jesperson was convicted.
