The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has issued a serious warning after discovering over 300 drones operated by cartels along the southern border in just a little over a month.
In response to this escalating threat, the Department of War and DHS are intensifying their deployment of drone detection and interception tools across the southern border region. Both agencies are also actively collaborating with private sector companies to innovate and develop advanced technologies specifically designed to counteract the growing presence of cartel drones.
In a public statement shared on X, DHS declared that "hostile surveillance of American personnel ends here." The department further addressed the criminal organizations directly, stating, "To the Cartels: Your drones are failing, your tactics are being exposed, and you have no advantage. @CBP and @DeptofWar will keep taking them down."
Evolving Surveillance Tactics
Historically, cartels relied on human lookouts positioned to monitor U.S. Border Patrol agents and other American personnel. However, these organizations have now transitioned to using drones for overhead surveillance, providing them with a more covert and extensive viewing capability.
An official explained the strategic advantage gained by cartels through drone use, noting, "They’re watching when our soldiers and our agents are coming into the field, where they’re working, and then that allows them to plan how they’re going to send individuals north from Mexico into the United States illegally, trying to circumvent us between the ports of entry."
The official also emphasized that each counter-drone operation is meticulously planned and closely coordinated with both the Mexican military and border authorities. This careful collaboration aims to prevent any interference or unintended conflicts between forces operating on either side of the international boundary.
Previous Administration's Strategy Praised
During a press briefing, senior administration officials previously commended President Donald Trump's approach to using military force in border security. They highlighted that "The president directed, (and) the Department of War executed the first-ever plan and strategy to use direct military force to defend the homeland from this threat."
These officials further asserted that the results of this strategy had been significant. "The effects have been spectacular, and we've seen the largest and steepest reduction in U.S. casualties inflicted by the cartels in American history," one official stated, underscoring the perceived effectiveness of the measures taken at that time.
