The Los Angeles Angels recently terminated an advance scout after he was reportedly observed filming the coaching staff of an opposing team. Justin Prinstein was dismissed following an incident during a June series against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field, as initially reported by The Athletic.
Scout's Unusual Tactics Revealed
Prinstein, who had reportedly adopted the moniker "The Baseball Spy" on social media, found his professional career abruptly ended under unusual circumstances. The decision to employ clandestine methods against the Colorado Rockies — a team significantly behind in their division standings — struck many as particularly ironic. The incident involved attempting to gain an advantage over a team that was more than 20 games out of first place, prompting questions about the value of the intelligence sought.
Unsubtle Espionage and Discovery
Reports indicate that Prinstein was positioned in the designated scout section at the Denver ballpark when he began recording Rockies coaches using his smartphone in plain view. Unlike incidents involving elaborate covert equipment, Prinstein's method was described as overtly conspicuous, simply holding up a cell phone in a populated stadium. This lack of subtlety led to him being spotted by someone in attendance, who subsequently alerted Major League Baseball. The league office then promptly informed the Angels organization of the violation.
MLB Regulations and Organizational Response
Major League Baseball has maintained stringent regulations against the use of personal electronic devices to record coaches or decode signals, a policy reinforced following the Houston Astros' sign-stealing scandal. Upon learning of Prinstein's actions, then-General Manager Perry Minasian acted swiftly, terminating the scout's employment immediately. Minasian subsequently contacted Rockies management to offer an apology for the attempted intelligence gathering. MLB's investigation concluded that Prinstein acted independently, thereby sparing the Angels from potential penalties such as fines or the loss of draft picks.
Despite the efforts to gain an advantage, the intelligence gathered proved ineffective. The Colorado Rockies ultimately secured victories in two of the three games played during the series. The entire episode culminated in Prinstein losing his career, violating league rules, and witnessing his team still lose the series, highlighting the swift and severe consequences of such actions.
